What is Capri Campers?
Capri Campers has built hand-crafted hard-sided slide-in truck campers in Bluff Dale, Texas since 1969. Two models cover the full range: the cabover Retreat starts at 1,175 lbs, and the lower-profile Cowboy starts at 695 lbs for mid-size trucks.
About Capri Campers
Capri Campers has been cutting, bending, and bolting truck campers by hand at their Bluff Dale, Texas facility since 1969, and very little about the core philosophy has changed in the decades since. The company started building lightweight campers for rodeo cowboys who needed something durable and easy to haul between events, and that same practical-over-fancy sensibility runs through every unit that leaves the shop today.
The lineup covers two distinct form factors. The Retreat is the taller cabover model, with a 6 ft 4 in interior standing height on fullsize configurations (6 ft 0 in on the mid-size) and a 60 by 80 inch queen bed in the cabover. It comes in four bed-length configurations from mid-size 6 ft up to a full 8 ft long bed, with dry weights starting at 950 lbs for the mid-size version and topping out at 1,375 lbs for the long-bed build. The Cowboy is a shorter, lower-profile cab-over camper that trims several hundred pounds versus the Retreat while keeping the same four bed-length range. At 695 lbs for the mid-size version, the Cowboy is one of the lightest hard-sided slide-ins available anywhere, and it sits low enough on the truck bed to stay well within most half-ton payload ratings once loaded.
Capri sells direct from the factory with a build-to-order process and a typical 6 to 8 week lead time. Options range from interior showers and roof-mount A/C to 200-watt solar panels and electric jacks. The factory is in Bluff Dale, roughly an hour southwest of Fort Worth, and buyers can pick up their camper in person or arrange freight. That direct relationship with a small Texas shop is a different experience than buying from a dealer network, and for owners who value simplicity, repairability, and knowing exactly where their gear was made, Capri has earned a strong following that extends well beyond the rodeo circuit.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Cowboy at 695 lbs (mid-size dry) is genuinely light enough for most half-ton trucks with payload to spare for gear, water, and passengers
- Direct factory sales at $13,995 (Cowboy) and $18,995 (Retreat) make Capri one of the most affordable hard-sided slide-in entry points in the USA market
- Build-to-order direct from a small Texas factory means buyers deal with the people who built the camper, which tends to simplify repairs and parts sourcing down the road
- Build-to-order means buyers choose exactly the options they want rather than paying for bundled feature packages
- Strong used-market resale value and a large owner community built over 55 years of continuous production
- Direct factory sales with no dealer network mean no dealer markup and direct access to the people who built your camper if anything needs attention
Cons
- Interior height on the Cowboy is 5 ft, which means most adults must crouch or kneel inside; it is a crawl-in camper, not a stand-up camper
- Wood framing, while repairable, is more susceptible to long-term moisture damage than aluminum-framed or composite builds if any seals are neglected
- No tank capacities published on the manufacturer site; buyers must select freshwater tank size (10, 16, or 30 gallon) at order time without clear spec sheet guidance
- Base models ship without a kitchen galley or wet bath; these are optional add-ons, so the base price is not a complete camping unit for longer trips
- No published wet weights on the manufacturer site, which makes payload planning harder than with brands that publish loaded weights
- Factory is in Bluff Dale, Texas, which means freight shipping costs can be significant for buyers outside the South-Central USA
