The Lightest Truck Campers (2026): 53 Under 1,000 lb, Sorted by Weight

The Short Version

  • The lightest camper we track is the Aegis Adventure Top at 185 lb. The GFC V2 Pro (about 275 lb, from $7,950) is our pick for most people: the most usable bed for the least weight.
  • Under 1,000 lb covers four very different products. Shells and wedges under 300 lb, insulated pop-ups from 300 to 500, micro-cabins from 500 to 700, and real slide-ins from 700 up.
  • Don't shop on dry weight. The gap between a builder's headline number and a camper you can actually use runs from under 100 lb to 500 lb. We list the worst offenders below.
  • Want hard walls you can stand up in? The Hiatus Mid-Size (460 to 490 lb) and the Scout Tuktut (577 lb) are the two to shortlist.

"Lightweight truck camper" is one of the most searched phrases in this whole category, and for good reason: weight decides which truck you need, how it rides, what your fuel bill looks like and whether you can pull the camper off on your own. The problem is that "lightweight" means anything from a 185 lb shell to a 1,900 lb slide-in, depending on who is selling it.

So we did the boring part. Below is every camper in our directory with a published weight under 1,000 lb, 53 of them, sorted by weight and grouped by what you actually get for it. Then we pick the best in each group and flag the weight claims that need a second look.

How we got these numbers

Weights and prices come from each manufacturer's spec sheet, as recorded in our directory and checked November 5, 2026. We have not weighed these campers ourselves. A few builders, including Alaskan, Supertramp and Allterra, don't publish a weight for the models we list, so they are left out rather than guessed.

Dry weight is the number that lies

Every builder quotes the lightest version of the camper it can: the shortest bed, the empty shell, no options. That is fair as a starting point, but it is not what goes on your truck. Look at the gaps in builders' own figures:

Bed length moves the number too. The Peak Performance Ultralight Stealth runs from 475 lb on a 5 ft bed to 675 lb on an 8 ft bed. The Capri Cowboy goes from 695 lb (mid-size, 6 ft) to 840 lb (8 ft long bed). Even the 225 lb Radica MoonLander is 310 to 420 lb in its 8 ft long-bed version.

Then add what you carry. Water weighs about 8.3 lb a gallon, so a 12 gal fresh tank is roughly 100 lb when full. Batteries, a fridge, an awning and jacks all count: Scout says its removable camper jacks weigh 125 lb on their own. Our rule of thumb: ask the builder for the weight of the camper as you would order it, then add your water and gear before you compare it with your truck's payload.

Under 300 lb: the camper that replaces your canopy

This is the group most people searching "lightest truck camper" should start with. These are shells, wedges and pop-up toppers that sit on the bed rails, stay within a few inches of cab height when closed, and leave the bed underneath for gear. Almost any mid-size truck can carry one, and you can still use the truck as a truck.

The GFC V2 Pro is our pick for most people. At about 275 lb and $7,950, you get a 50 x 90 in bed on a mid-size truck (56 x 90 on a full-size) and a roof rated for 500 lb when closed. Our full Go Fast Campers review prices real builds with the options people actually add.

The lightest thing on the list is the Aegis Adventure Top at 185 lb. It is a hard-sided pop-up with no fabric at all, 52.2 in of headroom when it is up, and a sleeping area that stretches from 80.5 to 106 in long with the hatch extended. It is built to order in Vernon, BC and priced in Canadian dollars, so the CA$11,000 starting price is lower than it looks for US buyers.

If budget comes first, the Radica MoonLander starts at $5,600 and 225 lb. It is a welded aluminum shell with a fixed roof, so there is nothing to set up, but at 33.25 in of interior height you are sitting, not standing. The OVRLND Bivy (under 230 lb, $7,700) and the Oru Tenfold (275 lb, $7,999) round out the group.

300 to 499 lb: insulation and headroom

Step up here when you want to camp in the shoulder seasons or stand up to change. This is the most crowded group, with pop-up toppers from GFC, 4 Wheel Campers, Super Pacific, Tune, AT and others. On a mid-size truck, plan for some rear suspension help and bed stiffeners (our Tacoma guide walks through what each weight class asks of the truck).

Our pick here is the Hiatus Mid-Size at 460 to 490 lb, from $17,000. Its walls are rigid insulated composite with closed-cell foam instead of tent fabric, and interior height is 6 ft 1 in to 6 ft 4 in with the angled frame. That is a lot of camper for less than 500 lb. On a budget, the Lone Peak Camper V2 (400 lb, from $7,500) is a hard-shell wedge built to order for a wide range of trucks.

500 to 699 lb: the micro-cabins

This is where a camper stops being a bed and becomes a room: a fixed roof or a full pop-up you can stand in, often with water on board. You also lose the easy part: getting a 600 lb camper off the truck takes jacks or a hoist.

The Scout Tuktut is our pick at 577 lb and $17,990. It is a hard-sided, fixed-roof cabin with 72.25 in of standing height, a 4.9 gal fresh tank, and a footprint made for short beds, down to the Ford Maverick's. One caution: when we checked on November 5, Scout's site listed the Tuktut as out of stock, so confirm price and lead time before you plan around it.

If you want water and waste on board, look at the Skinny Guy Model 5.0. It starts at 500 lb (up to 775 lb depending on build) and carries a 12 gal fresh tank and a 9 gal black tank on a 5 ft bed, with 78 in of headroom when it is popped up. At $29,500 it sits at the top of this group on price, so it is for people who will use those tanks. The BEAR Black Bear 5.0 (R12 insulation throughout) is the cold-weather alternative, but price it built: about 850 lb, not the 540 lb shell.

700 to 999 lb: slide-ins under 1,000

These are complete cabins that slide into the bed, and some sleep four. They are also the group where the dry weight versus as-ordered gap matters most, because you are already near what a mid-size truck can carry.

  • AT Aterra: 690 lb as a mid-size DIY shell, 757 lb as a mid-size standard build (from $32,500). Walls are R6, the roof R7.
  • Kimbo 6: 830 lb base, from $27,990, but 1,200 lb fully equipped. Our Kimbo 6 vs Scout Yoho comparison goes deeper on both.
  • Camp365 T-Model: 830 lb, from $25,000, and it sleeps four adults. Its walls fold, which keeps its travel height to 62 in.
  • Scout Yoho: 929 lb hard-wall, from $24,990, with 75 in of standing height and fitment for 5 and 6 ft mid-size beds.

Before you buy anything in this group for a mid-size truck, do the door-label math in our Tacoma guide: a slide-in plus people, water and gear can put a mid-size truck over its GVWR, and no suspension upgrade changes that rating.

Our verdict

For most people, the lightest truck camper worth buying is the GFC V2 Pro: about 275 lb, a real bed, and a truck that still drives like a truck. If you camp in the cold or want to stand up, the Hiatus Mid-Size gets you hard insulated walls for under 500 lb. If you want a cabin, the Scout Tuktut is the lightest one we would shortlist. Whatever you choose, ask for the weight of the camper as you would order it, add your water and gear, and compare that with the labels on your door, not with the brochure.
