What is Hower Built?
Hower Built makes fully electric pop-top truck campers in Durango, Colorado. Their patent-pending hands-free lift handles 300 lbs on the roof, and every model ships with an integrated REDARC power system and four-season insulated walls standard.
About Hower Built
Hower Built started with a simple frustration: pop-top campers were either too heavy, too manual, or too bare-bones to feel like a real home base on the trail. The team spent over a decade developing a solution in Durango, Colorado, where they still cut, weld, and assemble every unit by hand. The result is a lineup organized around one signature idea: a patent-pending electric lift mechanism that raises the roof hands-free at the push of a button, with a 300-pound capacity that lets you leave your gear loaded on top while you drive.
Every Hower Built camper ships with a factory-integrated REDARC power system, a heated lithium battery, dual LED ceiling lights, and pre-wired solar capacity, so there is no post-purchase electrical guesswork. The walls use R5 composite insulation with four-season canvas, and the Arctic Tern windows with blackout shades mean you can actually sleep in. The Railtop is a purpose-built pop-top shell installed at their Durango shop, keeping the road profile low. The Slide-In steps up to a fully enclosed, self-contained unit with four-point mounting and a removable design that lets you drop the camper and take the truck into town.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Hands-free electric roof lift with a 300-lb capacity is a genuine differentiator: gear stays loaded on the roof even while driving
- Full power system ships standard: integrated REDARC battery management, heated lithium, LED lighting, and solar pre-wiring are not upgrades
- Made in Durango, Colorado; installation is performed at their Durango shop
- Slide-In removes independently with four-point truck bed mounting so the truck remains usable when camp is set
- Four-season rated out of the box with R5 composite panels, weatherproof canvas, and Arctic Tern windows with blackout shades
Cons
- Installation requires driving to Durango, Colorado for a fitting at the Hower Built shop; campers are not shipped without installation
- Current lead time is approximately 4 months, which is longer than in-stock alternatives
- The Railtop at 400 lbs may stress stock suspension on some trucks; a suspension upgrade may be worth considering
- No published kitchen, water system, or interior furnishings on the Railtop; it is a shell that buyers build out themselves
- Contact is email-only with no public phone number, which can slow down pre-purchase questions and quote requests
- Canvas pop-top sides insulate less than a fully hard-sided roof in sustained below-freezing conditions
